The Trout Have New Homes
Students at Lincoln Middle School and Lyman Moore Middle School have been raising brook trout in their classrooms for the past 3 months. While raising the trout, they have been learning about the importance of healthy aquatic ecosystems and how to minimize human impact. Once the the trout have developed into the fry stage of their life cycle, they are ready to be released into local streams. Before saying goodbye to their fish, the kids conducted tests to measure the health of Capisic Brook and Mill Brook.
This amazing program is funded by the City of Portland through the Greener Neighborhoods Cleaner Streams program and taught by the Cumberland County Soil & Water Conservation District.
Thank you to all of the staff from the Portland Water District who volunteered their time to help with the trout releases.
Thank you to the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife for providing the brook trout eggs to our classrooms!
