Longfellow Students Research Connections Between Gardening and Stormwater

Throughout the month of May, Longfellow 5th graders researched a variety of YardScaping topics to improve stormwater issues around the school yard. The students compared equipment and tools, collected soil samples, harvested and turned compost piles, repurposed yard waste to build erosion control structures, manually removed invasive plants, and added native plants to prevent erosion, absorb stormwater, create habitat, and filter out some pollutants.

This amazing unit is funded by the City of Portland through the Greener Neighborhoods Cleaner Streams program and taught by the Cumberland County Soil & Water Conservation District.
